About This Program
Remote sensing and GIS are transforming industries from agriculture and urban planning to disaster management and environmental monitoring. This program teaches you to acquire, process, analyze, and visualize geospatial data from satellites, drones, and ground sensors. You'll work with real satellite imagery (Landsat, Sentinel-2, MODIS), learn industry-standard tools (QGIS, Google Earth Engine, Python geospatial libraries), and build web GIS applications that make geospatial insights accessible to decision-makers.
What You'll Be Able to Do
You will acquire, process, and analyze satellite imagery; perform GIS spatial analysis; and publish results as an interactive web map — a complete geospatial project from raw satellite data to actionable insight.
Who Should Attend
- GIS professionals wanting to upgrade to satellite remote sensing and cloud-based analysis
- Civil engineers and urban planners using geospatial data for infrastructure projects
- Agriculture professionals working with precision farming and crop monitoring
- Environmental scientists monitoring land use, water resources, and climate impact
- Software developers wanting to build geospatial applications
- Government and NGO professionals in disaster management and natural resource planning
Prerequisites
Basic computer skills. Interest in maps, satellite imagery, and spatial data. No prior GIS or remote sensing experience required. Basic Python helpful but taught in the program.

Module 1: Fundamentals of Remote Sensing & Earth Observation
Electromagnetic spectrum and satellite image capture. Types: optical, thermal, radar (SAR), LiDAR. Major platforms: Landsat, Sentinel-1/2, MODIS, PlanetScope. Spatial, spectral, radiometric, and temporal resolution. Data formats: GeoTIFF, NetCDF, HDF. Free data sources: USGS EarthExplorer, Copernicus Open Access Hub, Google Earth Engine Data Catalog.
Module 2: Satellite Image Processing & Analysis
Image pre-processing: radiometric calibration, atmospheric correction, geometric correction. Band combinations and spectral indices: NDVI, NDWI, NDBI, SAVI, EVI. Land use/land cover classification: supervised (Random Forest, SVM) and unsupervised (K-Means, ISODATA). Change detection. Accuracy assessment. Time series analysis of vegetation trends.
Module 3: GIS Analysis & Spatial Data Science
QGIS mastery: vector and raster operations, symbology, map layout, geoprocessing. Spatial analysis: buffers, overlays, proximity, zonal statistics. Coordinate Reference Systems and projections. Vector data: shapefiles, GeoJSON, OpenStreetMap. Spatial databases with PostGIS. Python geospatial: GeoPandas, Rasterio, Shapely, Fiona. Spatial statistics and hotspot analysis.
Module 4: Google Earth Engine & Cloud-Based Analysis
Google Earth Engine for planetary-scale analysis. JavaScript/Python API. Accessing and filtering massive satellite datasets. Cloud-based land cover classification. Time series at scale: 20 years of Landsat in minutes. Building Earth Engine Apps for non-technical users.
Module 5: Web GIS & Geospatial Application Development
Building web maps with Leaflet and OpenLayers. Interactive GIS dashboards with Python (Folium, Plotly, Streamlit). Publishing web maps: GeoServer, cloud tile services. Drone data processing: orthomosaic, DEM. Capstone: Complete remote sensing + GIS project from satellite data to web map publication.
